Steel Morchang (Various Scales)
Hand-crafted with exceptional acoustic precision, the Steel Morchang is a vibrant expression of Rajasthan’s living folk music traditions.
Crafted by Mohan Lal Lohar, the morchang — also known as the jew’s harp or jaw harp — is one of the world’s oldest and most mesmerizing instruments. Deeply rooted in Manganiyar folk and Sufi music traditions, its rhythmic metallic pulse creates a hypnotic and meditative soundscape unique to the deserts of Rajasthan.
Each Steel Morchang is individually hand-forged in Mohan Lal Lohar’s traditional workshop in Jaisalmer. Revered as both a master blacksmith and multi-instrumentalist, Mohan Lal continues generations of artisan craftsmanship native to the Thar Desert.
The steel construction produces a brighter, sharper, and highly responsive tone with crisp rhythmic clarity, making it ideal for both traditional folk performance and contemporary experimentation. Each piece carries subtle tonal and visual variations that reflect the authenticity of true handcrafted work.
Each instrument comes tuned and ready to play.
