Sakar Khan – At Home

The last recordings of a legend. Padma Shri Sakar Khan — India's highest civilian honour, awarded 2012 — is widely regarded as the greatest kamancha (kamaicha) player who ever lived. He was recorded at his home in the village of Hamira, Jaisalmer, at age 72. He passed away a year later. This album is his sole recorded legacy under his own name.
Sakar Khan collaborated with George Harrison and spent a lifetime coaxing music from a bowed lute that almost no one else could make sing. These recordings were made in single takes, in the intimacy of his home, with minimal equipment and maximum presence. The kamancha — wooden body crafted by Shankara Ram Suthar of Hamira, strings and hide fitted by the Manganiyars — sounds as if it is breathing.
