Premium Brass Morchang
Hand-crafted with remarkable acoustic precision, this Premium Brass Morchang is a resonant piece of living desert music heritage from Rajasthan, India.
Crafted by Mohan Lal Lohar, the morchang — also known globally as the jew’s harp or jaw harp — is among the world’s oldest and most hypnotic instruments. In the hands of Rajasthan’s Manganiyar musicians, it transforms into a deeply rhythmic and meditative soundscape, with Barmer Boys member Sawai Khan regarded as one of its celebrated contemporary masters.
Each morchang is entirely hand-forged in Mohan Lal Lohar’s traditional artisan workshop in Jaisalmer. A legendary blacksmith and multi-instrumentalist, Mohan Lal crafts and plays nearly every traditional wind, string, and percussion instrument native to the Thar Desert region.
Made using a specially selected brass alloy, this instrument produces a warm, resonant drone layered with a bright metallic shimmer. No two pieces are exactly alike — slight variations in finish and detailing reflect the authenticity of true hand craftsmanship.
Made to order — please allow 6–8 weeks for production and acoustic tuning. Contact us to discuss specific requirements before purchasing.
Each instrument comes tuned and ready to play.
