Kamaicha
The kamaicha, or kamancha, is the ancient spike fiddle at the heart of Manganiyar musical traditions — a deeply expressive instrument and a remarkable example of Rajasthan’s living craft heritage.
Each instrument is created through a centuries-old secular collaboration. The wooden body, neck, and bow are hand-carved from a single block of wood by master craftsmen such as Shankara Ram Suthar, whose restoration work once earned the admiration of legendary maestro Sakar Khan. Muslim Manganiyar musicians then complete the instrument by attaching the animal hide belly, fitting the gut strings, and carrying out the final acoustic tuning.
Handcrafted in association with the Amarrass Society for Performing Arts (ASPA), every kamaicha supports the preservation of endangered folk music traditions and sustainable livelihoods for rural artisans across Rajasthan.
Known for its haunting warmth and deep resonance, each kamaicha is individually handmade and made to order. Slight variations in finish and detailing are a natural hallmark of authentic craftsmanship.
Made to order — please allow 6–8 weeks for production and acoustic tuning. Contact us to discuss specific requirements before purchasing.
An incredible triumph of traditional craftsmanship and cross-cultural heritage. A masterpiece that breathes with life.
